Eating Alabama food blog. Food posts about southern food and the food we encounter in our travels. We aren’t food critics but we’ll do our best to talk about the entire experience.

Newbern's Restaurant

Well you know… we went to Newbern’s this summer and I never blogged about it. I can’t imagine it’s changed at all though. Newborn’s in Florence, Alabama is THE place you go to for fried fish. We heard about them before we even knew we were headed up to Florence. As usual, we planned on going to so many restaurants and ended up going to…. like three maybe? Let’s be real - it’s TOUGH to hit all of the good restaurants! So if you’re reading this and know of an awesome joint in your city - please let us know.

Now about Newbern’s Restaurant.

Sweet tea

We knew we were where it’s at in Florence because #1 - the parking lot was full #2 - trucks with their boats still hitched to them were all in the back parking lot #3 - when we walked in, the staff was super friendly and the smell of frying fish was intoxicating. oooooooo yeaaaaaaa. Oh WAIT! They had sweet tea with the good ice. Can’t find many restaurants with the good ice anymore.

Fried Fish

Of all the fried catfish I’ve eaten, NONE looked like these. They were not greasy at all. They were crispy on the outside and soft and incredibly flaky on the inside. We ordered the filet so we didn’t have to pick through the bones but you can totally order them whole and fried. The plate we ordered had fried catfish, fried shrimp, loaded baked potato and bonus hush puppies. Everything was cooked perfectly. I love their frying method - so different than what I’ve had before! I can see why it was so crowded in Newbern’s!

Catfish 2

Here you go for the close up of these beauties. Mmmmmm - they have something special going on up at Newbern’s.

Fried Catfish

I think they have other sides to pick from but I think Nick was carb loading that night. But if you look up in the corner, you’ll see a ripe Alabama grown tomato, pickles, and a raw onion sliced as a side. That is as Southern as you can get. For me, it just screams of the deep south…. eating at my Granny’s… really eating at any good southern restaurant.

Not pictured - we ordered their lemon ice box pie and their coconut pie. We took it back to the hotel and that’s where they disappeared. When you leave pie unattended around teenage girls, it gets gobbled up before you can blink. UGH bummer. They did say the pie was delicious so there you go.

Go to Newbern’s! You won’t be disappointed…. unless you hate delicious fried catfish, shrimp, and hushpuppies. Go check them out!
